The Detroit Institute of Arts will reveal a fresh take on its modern and contemporary collections this fall, when Reimagine Modern Art and Reimagine Contemporary Art open on November 15, 2026. The reinstalled galleries will remain on view through November 13, 2027.
The twin presentations are part of the museum’s ongoing Reimagine project, which rethinks how the DIA’s encyclopedic collection is displayed — bringing beloved masterpieces and lesser-known works into new conversations. The African American galleries, reimagined in 2025, drew praise for placing historic and contemporary voices side by side; the new modern and contemporary installations promise a similar mix of icons and discoveries.
With more than 65,000 works, the DIA’s collection ranks among the top six in the United States. The museum, at 5200 Woodward Avenue in Midtown, is open Tuesday through Sunday, with late hours until 9 p.m. on Fridays. Residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties enjoy free general admission.
