Colorado State Capitol: Denver’s Golden Dome, One Mile High

Denver’s skyline has a golden crown: the Colorado State Capitol, whose 24-karat gold-plated dome has been shining over the city since 1908. Sitting exactly one mile above sea level — look for the “Mile High” step marker — it’s both a working seat of government and one of Colorado’s most beloved landmarks.

The building is packed with history and beauty: rose onyx and white marble interiors, stained-glass windows telling Colorado’s story, and portraits of every U.S. president. Free guided tours run on weekdays and take you up to the dome’s observation level, where panoramic views stretch from downtown Denver all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Outside, the grounds are dotted with memorials and offer classic photo angles of the dome against the mountains.

It’s ideal for history lovers, architecture fans, school groups and first-time visitors. Practical tip: tours are free but offered on a schedule — check the Capitol’s website before you go and arrive a few minutes early, as groups can fill up. Security screening is required at entry, so bring minimal bags. A Denver must-see, and completely free.
