The Man Who Brought Modernism to the Rockies: Denver Art Museum Celebrates John E. Thompson

The Denver Art Museum is shining a well-deserved spotlight on a true Colorado trailblazer. John E. Thompson and Colorado Modernism, now on view on level seven of the Martin Building, brings together 28 artworks that celebrate the life, legacy and community of the artist credited with bringing European modernism to the Rocky Mountain region.

Opening July 19, 2026, and on view through summer 2028, the exhibition honors Thompson’s extraordinary career — from his visionary paintings to his role as a teacher and mentor who opened doors for women and immigrant artists. Thanks to the support of local collectors and The Kirkland, the show also pays tribute to the patrons who changed the course of artistic production in Colorado.

“Modernism can be shaped and shared anywhere by anyone, and Thompson’s career reflects that,” said Christoph Heinrich, the museum’s Frederick and Jan Mayer Director. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the bold styles and colors of an artist who believed art is for everyone.

Best of all, the exhibition is included with general admission — and visitors aged 18 and under always enjoy free admission thanks to the museum’s Free for Kids program. Plan your visit at denverartmuseum.org.
