Iván Argote asks Dallas to rethink monuments in a playful new solo show

Dallas Contemporary has kicked off its fall season with a splash: How to Move a Monument on a Tuesday Morning, a major solo exhibition by Colombian artist Iván Argote, on view October 3, 2026 through January 31, 2027.

Argote, born in Bogotá and based in Paris, is known around the world for blending sculpture, film, painting and performance with humor and poetic mischief. His new show invites visitors to look at public monuments — those bronze heroes on pedestals — and ask playful questions: who gets remembered, and how could those stories change?

The centerpiece is Levitate, a three-channel video installation that follows the removal of colonial-era monuments in Rome, Madrid and Paris, reflecting on migration, identity and the evolving meaning of public symbols. The exhibition also premieres new sculptures from his Wild Flowers series: fragments of historic figures, cast in bronze and hollowed out to become planters filled with native flora — monuments literally brought back to life.

Best of all, admission to Dallas Contemporary is free, thanks to support from the Eugene McDermott Foundation, so everyone can come play with these big ideas. The Design District kunsthalle welcomes you at 161 Glass Street — stop by and see history from a brand-new angle!
