Most memorials honor wars. Columbus’ National Veterans Memorial and Museum honors the people who fought them — all of them, from the Revolution to today, told through their own words, letters and belongings.
Opened in 2018 on the Scioto riverfront in a striking spiral of concrete, the nation’s only museum dedicated to veterans’ stories organizes its galleries by experience rather than conflict: service, duty, loss, homecoming. A 14-screen “Great Hall” of stained glass and a rooftop sanctuary for reflection complete a visit that moves everyone.
Columbus — home to no major military base — built this for the whole country, and the country has noticed: it is routinely ranked among America’s essential new museums.
Bring tissues. Leave grateful. That is precisely the design.
