All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy — and a fascinating opera. Opera Columbus closes its 45th anniversary season with the Columbus premiere of “The Shining” (April 16–18, 2027), Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell’s acclaimed opera of Stephen King’s novel.
The Overlook Hotel becomes a pressure cooker of orchestra and voice: the Torrances’ isolation, the hotel’s seductive ghosts and Jack’s unraveling, rendered in music that critics praised for marrying genuine dread with genuine beauty. It is the boldest title on any Ohio stage this season.
King granted the rights; Minnesota Opera’s premiere sold out; now Columbus gets the keys to Room 217 — pardon, 237.
Heeere’s Johnny, in high C. Horror fans and opera fans, same line, same night.
