Some buildings hold a city together. On the banks of the Olentangy, Ohio Stadium — “the Horseshoe,” “the Shoe” — has held Columbus together since 1922, a concrete colossus where 102,000 voices sing “Hang On Sloopy” as one.
Home of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the double-decked horseshoe is a National Register landmark and one of the largest stadiums on Earth. On fall Saturdays it becomes Ohio’s third-largest “city,” awash in scarlet and gray; the marching band’s Script Ohio — the dotting of the i — remains college football’s most beloved ritual.
Even empty, the rotunda and the great arch reward a photo stop on any campus walk.
To understand Columbus, start here on a Saturday. O-H!
