Chicago Is Looking for Its 2026 Christmas Tree

Is your backyard hiding Chicago’s 2026 Christmas tree? The City of Chicago and DCASE (Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events) have opened nominations for the official 2026 Christmas Tree, now through Friday, October 23, 2026.

Candidate trees must be at least 45 feet tall and located within 50 miles of the Loop, with preference for those within 15 miles. Norway spruce or fir trees are preferred; pines are not eligible. The chosen tree will light up downtown all season long — staying illuminated in Millennium Park through Sunday, January 10, 2027.

The 113th Annual City of Chicago Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place Friday, November 20, 2026, in Millennium Park: the pre-show begins at 4 p.m., the ceremony at 6 p.m., and the lighting — followed by fireworks — around 6:30 p.m. ABC7 Chicago will broadcast it live.

The city also opened applications for the Millennium Park Holiday Market through Sunday, October 18: more than 40 local artisans and small businesses will fill the North Promenade (November 20–21, noon to 8 p.m.; November 22, noon to 5 p.m.). The free, family-friendly season also includes Holiday Sing-Alongs and ice skating at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink.
