Cabinet of Wonder: Natalie Merchant and the CSO Bring a Free Musical Treasure to Chicago Families

Some childhood magic lasts a lifetime, and Chicago just got a brand-new gift of it. Singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant has teamed up with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Children’s Theatre to release Cabinet of Wonder, a free digital album that reimagines Mother Goose nursery rhymes for a new generation of young listeners.

The 17-track collection blends classic rhymes with three original songs by Merchant, performed alongside CSO musicians and special guests in playful orchestral arrangements by Megan Gould. From a brassy Dixieland take on “Little Miss Muffet” to the Calypso swing of “Humpty Dumpty” and the Celtic rollick of “Hickory Dickory Dock,” every song introduces little ears to new instruments and musical styles. The accompanying videos feature Merchant, CSO musicians, shadow puppetry by Chicago’s own Manual Cinema, and a cast of 24 Chicago children.

Best of all, it is completely free. The project’s rich website offers families and teachers every rhyme, song, video, photograph, sheet music, and teaching guide at no charge — a true treasure chest for curious kids. The program already delighted Chicago Public Schools students during a year of pilot programs, ending with concerts for 3,000 children at Symphony Center.

A joyful way for Chicago families to fall in love with classical music together.
