Sullenberger Aviation Museum: Where Flight — and a Miracle — Live

It is the most famous airplane in the world that never reached its destination — and it lives in Charlotte. The Sullenberger Aviation Museum (formerly Carolinas Aviation Museum), beside Charlotte Douglas International Airport, is built around US Airways Flight 1549, the Airbus A320 Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger ditched in the Hudson River in 2009, saving all 155 aboard.

The museum — renamed for Sully and reopened in a spectacular new hangar — tells the Carolinas’ whole aviation story around that centerpiece: Piedmont Airlines heritage, military aircraft, a Cessna that flew around the world and hands-on STEM exhibits that put kids in the cockpit. The Miracle exhibit pairs the aircraft with passengers’ stories, told with goosebump-inducing care.

Aviation museums preserve machines; this one preserves a miracle — and the professionalism that made it possible.
