If Charlotte has a neighborhood with its own gravitational pull, it’s Plaza Midwood. Centered on the Central Avenue and The Plaza crossroads east of Uptown, this streetcar suburb turned bohemian stronghold mixes vintage shops, record stores, murals and dive-bar legends with the global kitchens of Charlotte’s immigrant heartland.
The vibe is defiantly local: yard-art dinosaurs, Little Free Libraries, the annual Midwood Maynia festival and porch parties that spill across bungalow-lined streets. Central Avenue’s parade of bakeries, taquerias, Ethiopian and Vietnamese restaurants makes dinner a delicious world tour.
Plaza Midwood doesn’t try to be the city’s coolest neighborhood; it just is — by being itself, loudly, kindly and with excellent snacks.
