For decades, Charlotte literally paved over Little Sugar Creek. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway is the city’s apology and triumph: the creek daylighted and restored, its banks replanted, and 19 miles of trails (and counting) following it from the South Carolina line through Midtown to the north side.
The Midtown stretch is the showpiece — sculpted banks below the Metropolitan, skyline-framed bridges, herons stalking the shallows where asphalt used to be. Segments link Freedom Park, the Park Road corridor and neighborhood after neighborhood, forming the spine of a planned 40-mile Cross Charlotte Trail.
It’s an environmental success you can jog on: water cleaner, wildlife back, and a generation of Charlotte kids growing up with a living creek as their backyard.
