Discovery Place Science: Uptown’s Hands-On Wonder Factory

Since 1947, Discovery Place has been where Charlotte falls in love with science. Its Uptown flagship, Discovery Place Science, stacks a living rainforest (complete with two-toed sloth energy), a saltwater aquarium, physics playgrounds and the Carolinas’ largest IMAX dome into one buzzing city block.

KidScience gives the under-7 crowd a water-and-blocks wonderland; older experimenters graduate to maker labs, live science shows and blockbuster touring exhibitions that have brought dinosaurs, mummies and space hardware to Tryon Street. The center’s science cafés and adult nights prove the formula works at every age.

Discovery Place anchors a whole family of museums — Nature, Kids locations in Huntersville and Rockingham — but the Uptown original remains the region’s beating laboratory heart.
