The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston is turning 90 in spectacular style. Founded in 1936 as a sister institution of New York’s MoMA, the ICA — now glowing on the waterfront at 25 Harbor Shore Drive — celebrates nine decades of daring art with “90 YEARS,” a museum-wide anniversary exhibition running October 15, 2026 through March 7, 2027.
The headline every art lover is buzzing about: Yayoi Kusama’s beloved LOVE IS CALLING is back. The dazzling Infinity Mirror Room, acquired by the ICA in 2018, returns to view in Boston for the first time since its sensational 2019 debut — a chance to step inside an endless universe of glowing tentacled color.
The celebration keeps building. On December 11, 2026, the ICA recreates Andy Warhol’s legendary Exploding Plastic Inevitable — “The Inevitable Return” — sixty years after the 1966 concert that rocked Boston, complete with Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds. Dance returns too, with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company on November 20–22, plus a conversation with video-art pioneer Tony Oursler and GBH president Susan Goldberg on October 15 at 7 PM, and Andrew Schneider’s interactive light installation NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars) in January.
Works by Simone Leigh, Ellen Gallagher, Glenn Ligon and Jenny Holzer round out a season that proves ninety looks radiant on the ICA.
