Tucked into the heart of Golden Gate Park, Stow Lake feels like a page from a storybook. This gentle man-made lake, created in 1893, wraps around Strawberry Hill island, and at its edge sits the charming Stow Lake Boathouse, where visitors rent rowboats and pedal boats for unhurried laps around the water.
Gliding across the lake is one of San Francisco’s sweetest simple pleasures. From a boat you drift beneath stone bridges, watch turtles sunning themselves on logs and spot herons and ducks along the reeds. Look up and you will see the Chinese Pavilion, a colorful pagoda gifted by Taipei in 1981, waiting on Strawberry Hill’s shore.
Land lovers get their own adventure. A path climbs Strawberry Hill to Huntington Falls, a 110-foot waterfall cascading down the island, and to sweeping views over the park. Back at the boathouse, the cafe serves coffee, snacks and its beloved pink popcorn, a nostalgic Golden Gate Park tradition.
Whether you come to paddle, picnic or simply wander, Stow Lake rewards a slow afternoon. It is proof that some of the city’s happiest places ask for nothing more than a boat, a breeze and a little free time.
