AUSTIN, Texas — The LBJ Presidential Library is opening its doors for free on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026, inviting veterans, active-duty service members, and all museum visitors to spend the holiday exploring one of Austin’s most beloved museums at no cost.
The free day is part of the library’s tradition of marking select holidays and special occasions throughout the year with complimentary admission for everyone. Veterans Day is a fitting occasion: Lyndon B. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and his presidency was shaped in part by that service — a story woven through the museum’s galleries.
Inside, visitors can step into a replica of the Oval Office as it looked during Johnson’s presidency, trace the landmark laws of the Great Society and the civil rights era, and browse exhibits filled with photographs, recordings, and personal artifacts. The museum’s permanent displays pair big national moments with warm, human stories — including Lady Bird Johnson’s work for wildflowers and the environment, a favorite stop for Austin families.
The 14-story library sits on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, at 2313 Red River Street, surrounded by lawns and shaded paths that make it an easy, relaxed outing. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and no advance reservation is needed for the free Veterans Day admission — just come by and enjoy.
Free-admission days tend to be popular, so arriving earlier in the day is a good idea. However you plan it, a free day at the LBJ Library is a cheerful way to honor veterans and spend time with Texas history right in the heart of Austin. Happy City News will share more Austin museum days as they are announced.
