Indigenous Artists Take Center Stage in ‘What We Carry Forward’ at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Las Vegas is getting ready to celebrate Indigenous creativity in a big way. The Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum will present “What We Carry Forward,” its Indigenous Heritage Month exhibition, bringing together works by Indigenous artists and creators for a colorful exploration of stewardship, knowledge systems, community and creativity.

The museum — a nonprofit Smithsonian Affiliate in the city’s Cultural Corridor — invited Indigenous artists to share their unique perspectives on what is preserved, transformed, reclaimed or envisioned for the future. Submissions were accepted from September 10 through October 18, and the selected works will now take over the gallery as the city marks Indigenous Heritage Month in November.

The exhibition’s theme asks a beautiful question: how do cultures carry their knowledge forward across generations? Through art, the participating creators reflect on the enduring strength of their heritage, from care for the land and traditional knowledge to the living creativity of Indigenous communities today. It is a joyful, thought-provoking addition to the museum’s year-round calendar of community-curated exhibitions, which also includes the beloved December to Remember holiday show.

Visitors can experience “What We Carry Forward” at the museum, 900 Las Vegas Boulevard North, open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., surrounded by the roaring T. rex, live sharks and hands-on science galleries that make it a family favorite.
