Chicago knows how to start the holidays with a smile. The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade returns to State Street on Thursday, November 26, 2026, from 7:45 to 10 a.m., celebrating its 92nd year as one of the city’s most beloved traditions. The free, all-ages procession steps off at Ida B. Wells Drive and travels north to Randolph Street, and more than 25,000 spectators are expected to line the route through the heart of the Loop.
Leading the fun is Teddy the Turkey, the parade’s official mascot, joined by larger-than-life helium balloons featuring favorites like the Grinch, Cookie Monster and Rudolph. Festive floats from local groups and arts organizations roll alongside equestrian units with miniature horses, cultural dance troupes, acrobats and school performers from across the country. Chicago Bears legend Charles “Peanut” Tillman serves as this year’s grand marshal, and Santa Claus himself will close the parade riding in a brand-new sleigh.
The parade began in the 1930s to lift spirits during the Great Depression, and that joyful mission still shines today. For the best views, arrive early along State Street near the Chicago Theatre marquee, or ride the CTA to the Harold Washington Library, Jackson, Monroe or Clark and Lake stops. Bundle up, bring the family and let Chicago’s happiest morning march you straight into the holiday season.
