Cascade Springs Nature Preserve: Atlanta’s Waterfall Walk Through One of Its Oldest Forests

Atlanta is full of surprises, and one of its loveliest hides in the southwest of the city. Cascade Springs Nature Preserve is a 135-acre green escape where tumbling streams, peaceful woods and a real waterfall wait just minutes from busy streets, shopping plazas and historic neighborhoods.

The best way to enjoy it is the 1.6-mile trail. From the parking area, a boardwalk leads into the shade, past a small moss-covered stone springhouse that looks straight out of a storybook. The path then meets Utoy Creek and climbs gently through a boulder-strewn forest blanketed in ferns and ivy. After a little more than a mile, you start to hear falling water — and then Cascade Springs appears, tumbling over three cascades and passing under a small bridge before the trail loops back along the creek.

The preserve was created in the 1970s to protect one of the oldest forests inside Atlanta’s city limits. Along the way, signs share the area’s earlier stories, including the historic earthworks still visible in the woods and the days when spring water was bottled because people believed in its refreshing qualities.

It is an easy, happy outing for families: shaded paths, picnic areas and dogs welcome on a leash. Go early in the morning for fewer people and gentler light for photos. You will find it at 2852 Cascade Road in Atlanta — bring comfortable shoes, your camera and time to linger by the falls.
