Hands-On Science for Kids at the Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center’s secret weapon is that almost everything begs to be touched. On the Inner Harbor’s south shore, kids excavate dinosaur bones in the fossil dig, crawl through the Kids Room’s water tables and climbing nets (a dedicated world for ages 8 and under), conduct experiments in the SciLab and test the physics of their own bodies across three floors of exhibits.

The Davis Planetarium is the family’s midday marvel — shows range from preschool star stories to deep-space journeys — and the IMAX theater’s five-story screen turns nature films into expeditions. The center’s daily live science demonstrations (think: explosive chemistry, hair-raising electricity) gather the whole floor.

The Maryland Science Center is at 601 Light Street. Plan your visit at mdsci.org — the Kids Room is most magical before the school groups arrive.
