Port Discovery: Baltimore’s Children’s Museum Inside a Power Plant

It might be the most inspired reuse in Baltimore: the cavernous old Fish Market building on the harbor, reborn as Port Discovery Children’s Museum — three floors of climb, build, splash and pretend that regularly rank among America’s best children’s museums.

The centerpiece is the SkyClimber, a soaring multi-story climbing structure kids scale in the building’s great hall; around it unfold a kid-size Baltimore neighborhood (grocery, diner, gas station), the Wonders of Water room, the Adventure Expeditions Egyptian adventure, and the Port Discovery ‘harbor’ where little captains load cargo. The museum’s Tot Trails area gives toddlers their own soft world.

Port Discovery is at 35 Market Place, steps from the Inner Harbor. Tickets and hours at portdiscovery.org — weekend mornings sell out, so reserve ahead.
