As America counts down to its 250th birthday in 2026, the Walters Art Museum is looking at its own North American holdings with fresh eyes. Selections from the North American Collection: The United States at 250, an ongoing installation, gathers paintings, decorative arts and objects that tell the young nation’s story — including works tied to Baltimore’s own golden age of making.
The Walters’ American strengths are distinctive: Baltimore album quilts, silver from the city’s great silversmiths, furniture and portraiture from the republic’s first decades, displayed in the Hackerman House, where the rooms themselves are period pieces. It is a fitting place to take the measure of 250 years.
The installation is at the Walters Art Museum, 600 North Charles Street in Mount Vernon, free during museum hours (Wednesday–Sunday). Details at thewalters.org.
