‘Flashback: Two Centuries of Baltimore Photography’ at the BMA Through February 21

Baltimore has been photographing itself for 185 years — and the Baltimore Museum of Art has gathered the evidence. Flashback: Two Centuries of Baltimore Photography, on view through February 21, 2027, assembles more than 200 images tracing how the camera recorded, and shaped, this city: its streets and stoops, its industries and celebrations, its ordinary days and historic ones.

The exhibition spans the medium’s whole Baltimore story, from 19th-century pioneers to beloved documentarians like A. Aubrey Bodine and contemporary voices including Devin Allen and SHAN Wallace, whose lenses defined how the world saw Baltimore in the 2010s. A community-curated reading room and Baltimore-inspired soundtrack keep the show feeling like the city itself — proud, funny, unvarnished.

Flashback is at the Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Drive. The BMA’s general admission is free; check artbma.org for any exhibition ticketing and for Thursday-evening hours, when the museum stays open until 9 p.m.
