‘BMA Celebrates MICA 200’: Two Baltimore Institutions, One Exhibition

America’s oldest continuously operating art school turns 200, and its neighbor is throwing the exhibition. BMA Celebrates MICA 200, on view at the Baltimore Museum of Art into the winter, draws entirely from the BMA’s own collection to honor the Maryland Institute College of Art’s bicentennial — two centuries of artists formed in Baltimore’s classrooms.

The works span painting, sculpture, photography, film, textiles, jewelry and works on paper, tracing the creative DNA the two institutions share: MICA, founded in 1826, has supplied generations of the BMA’s artists, teachers and curators, and its Mount Royal campus sits just down the hill from the museum. The exhibition doubles as a portrait of a city that has been serious about art education longer than almost any in America.

BMA Celebrates MICA 200 is at the Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Drive, with the museum’s free admission. Details at artbma.org.
