‘With Profit and Pleasure’: Japanese Prints at Evergreen Museum & Library Through June 2027

A Gilded Age mansion is the perfect frame for woodblock elegance. With Profit and Pleasure: The Legacy of Japanese Prints, on view at Johns Hopkins’ Evergreen Museum & Library from October 8, 2026 through June 27, 2027, explores how Japanese prints entered the Garrett family’s collection — and Baltimore’s imagination — in the age of Japonisme.

Evergreen itself is the exhibition’s co-star: the 48-room Garrett mansion in north Baltimore, home to a railroad fortune, a pioneering woman ambassador (Mary Elizabeth Garrett’s remarkable circle) and layers of art, including a rare private theater painted by Léon Bakst. The Japanese prints converse with the house that collected them — commerce, pleasure and taste in Meiji-era color.

Evergreen Museum & Library is at 4545 North Charles Street. The exhibition is included with house tours; schedules at museums.jhu.edu. (A special screening of the original 1954 Godzilla accompanies the run on October 22, 2026.)
