Texas Music Museum: The Soundtrack of the Lone Star, Preserved

Texas music didn’t start with Austin’s rock clubs — it started with fiddles, accordions and church harmonies across a dozen cultures. The Texas Music Museum, a labor of love in East Austin, documents that deeper river: exhibits honoring Tejano pioneers, East Texas blues masters, Czech and German polka bands, gospel quartets and the conjunto and country traditions that fed the Austin sound.

Photographs, instruments, stage costumes and listening posts fill the galleries, while the museum’s programs record oral histories with aging musicians — preservation as a race against time. Its East Austin home, in the heart of the communities that made much of this music, is exactly right.

For music lovers who think they know Texas music, this museum is the roots beneath the tree — humble, rich and essential.
