On Congress Avenue, a glowing lattice roof marks downtown Austin’s temple of the new. The Jones Center, The Contemporary Austin’s urban flagship, pairs 5,000+ square feet of galleries with one of the most striking small-museum buildings in Texas — Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis’s renovation wrapped a former department store in perforated light.
Inside, the programming is pure Contemporary: solo exhibitions by artists on the international rise, the museum’s celebrated Crit Group and Young Artists programs, and installations that spill from the galleries onto the rooftop deck, where openings become skyline parties. Admission stays deliberately affordable, with free days woven through the calendar.
Together with Laguna Gloria, the Jones Center gives Austin a two-hearted contemporary museum — one foot downtown, one in a lakeside garden. Both beat fast.
