Stand on South Congress Avenue, look north, and there it is — the Texas Capitol perfectly framed at the end of the street, the postcard view Austin saves for its favorite avenue. Locals call it SoCo, and a stroll here is a stroll through the city’s soul.
The avenue mixes old Austin and new with effortless charm. Western wear institutions sell hand-tooled boots a few doors from quirky gift shops, candy stores and galleries. The famous “Greetings from Austin” mural turns every visitor into part of the artwork, and the Continental Club — the granddaddy of Austin music venues — has hosted legends since 1955.
Food trucks cluster in sunny lots, coffee shops spill onto sidewalks, and on First Thursdays the whole street turns into an open-air block party with extended hours and live music drifting from doorways.
SoCo is more than a shopping street; it is Austin’s memory lane, endlessly walkable and endlessly photogenic. Come hungry, wear comfortable shoes, and leave plenty of time to wander.
