Austin may have the happiest dining rooms in America, and many of them have wheels. The city counts well over a thousand food trucks, trailers and carts, gathered in permanent “trailer parks” with picnic tables, string lights and live oaks — no white tablecloths, all flavor.
The variety is dizzying: Thai curry beside Detroit-style pizza, Ethiopian injera next to Hawaiian shave ice, and some of the country’s most decorated tacos — a few Austin trucks have earned Michelin Guide recognition and James Beard nods while still serving from a window. For young chefs, a truck is Austin’s great democratizer: low rent, big dreams, instant neighborhood.
Clusters along South 1st, East Cesar Chavez, North Loop and the Zilker-Barton Springs corridor make it easy to graze: order from three trucks, share everything at a communal table, and let the kids chase dessert from a fourth.
Pro tip: follow the trucks’ social feeds for pop-ups and specials, bring cash for the tip jar, and never skip the truck with the longest line of locals.
