Hyde Park Theatre: Tiny Room, Mighty Premieres

Austin’s most decorated theatre seats 83 people in a former post office. Hyde Park Theatre — in the Quack’s bakery building on West 43rd — has spent decades proving that intimacy plus excellence beats scale: its productions of new and classic plays regularly sweep Austin’s theatre awards, and its premieres travel to stages across America.

Its wildest gift to the city is FronteraFest — the January-February festival of short and long fringe works, hundreds of performances in its “Best of the Week” churn, which has launched generations of Austin playwrights and performers since 1993. The theatre’s neighborhood embeddedness (this is Hyde Park’s living room as much as its stage) gives every show a hometown electricity.

Small room, huge reputation. If you see one play a year in Austin, the smart money sits here.
