All Aboard: Free Sunday Sails Bring Wooden Boat Magic to Seattle Families

Seattle families have a hands-on reason to head to South Lake Union this season: the Center for Wooden Boats is welcoming young sailors aboard its free Sunday Public Sail tradition, and registration for the November sailings opens on November 10, 2026, with outings planned for Sunday, November 22 and Sunday, November 29.

The Center for Wooden Boats is a living museum on the south shore of Lake Union, where visitors do not just look at historic boats — they climb aboard and help sail them. Its fleet includes classic sailboats, steamboats and rowboats, and the Sunday sailings are led by volunteer skippers and crew who share the stories behind each vessel while gliding past the city skyline.

For children, it is often a first taste of life on the water: feeling the breeze fill a sail, watching a steamboat chug along, and learning simple seamanship in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Best of all, the public sails are offered at no cost, making them one of the most joyful free family traditions on the lake.

Spots are popular, so families are encouraged to sign up as soon as registration opens and to arrive ready for fresh air, harbor views and a little maritime adventure. Shoreside, the museum’s exhibits, toy boat building and waterfront promenade make it easy to turn a sail into a full family day at Lake Union Park.
