Tampa has a beach day hiding in plain sight in South Tampa. Picnic Island Park, at 7409 Picnic Island Boulevard, is the spacious waterfront park the City of Tampa calls “a hidden gem” — white sand, calm bay water and sunsets that turn the whole sky gold, all without leaving the city.
The shoreline is the star. Families spread out on the white-sand beach while the bay stays tranquil, and just south of the fishing pier a separate, gated dog beach lets four-legged swimmers splash in the same gentle water. The extra-wide concrete boat ramp is open 24 hours, with an adjacent fishing pier, and across the street a canoe and kayak launch slips paddlers toward the mangrove tunnels around the island.
On land, the day can be as busy or as lazy as you like. Kids get a sandy playground with jungle gyms, slides, swings and a rope climber. There is a sand volleyball court, roomy picnic shelters with tables and grills for gatherings, and a scenic disc golf course the city notes has more topography than most Florida courses — with cool breezes rolling off the water. Outdoor Energi fitness stations are scattered through the park, and restrooms, an outdoor shower and drinking fountains for people and pets keep everyone comfortable.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Pack a picnic, bring the dog and stay for the sunset — this is South Tampa at its happiest.
