Bastrop State Park: Austin’s Lost Pines Escape, 32 Miles East

Just 32 miles east of Austin, Bastrop State Park protects the famous Lost Pines, a forest Austinites have loved for more than 70 years. Today its happiest story is renewal: a new generation of loblolly pines is growing across the park, and every visit shows nature’s resilience up close, among tall trunks, fern-covered clearings and quiet, pine-scented shade.

Seven miles of trail invite walkers and hikers to explore the recovering forest, while families can camp, picnic, ride bikes, geocache, join a ranger nature program or fish in half-acre Lake Mina — no license needed to fish from shore in a Texas state park, and the park lends equipment. Overnight choices range from walk-in tent sites and full-hookup RV sites to the historic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Children can earn Junior Ranger status with a free activity journal and a borrowed explorer pack full of tools for discovering wildlife.

For a slower pleasure, bike or drive scenic Park Road 1C, the hilly 12-mile link to neighbouring Buescher State Park, through forested stretches of the Lost Pines at a gentle 30 miles per hour. Stop at the interpretive centre to place the forest in its long story, ask about the all-terrain wheelchair available to reserve for a visit, and end the day back among the cabins and campsites as evening light filters through the pines.
