Houston families have a sweet way to close out fall: the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center hosts its Pumpkin Planters family class on Saturday, October 31, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., a hands-on afternoon that turns a pumpkin into a tiny living garden.
The class is designed for ages 5 and up, with minors accompanied by an adult. Participants will learn how to properly plan, plant, and care for three species of native plants inside a cute artificial pumpkin container — so the planter can keep brightening the home long after the class ends. Then comes the decorating: each mini-garden gets finished with ribbons, glass pebbles, and other festive touches, making every planter one of a kind.
It is a lovely mix of nature learning and fall creativity. Children discover why native plants matter for Houston’s pollinators and wildlife, practice a little gardening science, and leave proudly carrying a garden they made themselves. The Arboretum recommends wearing clothes you don’t mind getting messy — soil and creativity are both part of the fun.
Admission is $47 for members and $62 for nonmembers, priced per planter, and the Arboretum recommends no more than two people per planter so everyone gets hands-on time. Spots in these popular family classes tend to go quickly, so booking ahead through the Arboretum’s events calendar is a good idea.
Set inside Houston’s beloved urban nature sanctuary, Pumpkin Planters is a cheerful, screen-free way to celebrate the season together — pumpkins, wildflowers, and a garden to take home.
