Boo at the Zoo Returns Oct. 16–18: Halloween Trick-or-Treating with the Animals

Halloween is arriving early in Washington, D.C.! The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is bringing back its beloved Boo at the Zoo for three spook-tacular evenings: Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Zoo members get a special treat with exclusive early entry from 5 to 6 p.m. each night. This family favorite celebrates its 2026 edition with not-so-spooky fun for little ghosts and goblins of all ages.

Costumed kids can fill their bags at more than 25 treat stations scattered throughout the park, snap photos at the pumpkin patch, giggle at playful vignettes featuring frolicking skeletons, and boogie at a whimsical kids’ dance party. Three favorite indoor exhibits stay open until 8:30 p.m. — the Small Mammal House, the Elephant Community Center (home to baby elephant Linh Mai), and the Reptile Discovery Center. Every guest receives a commemorative Boo at the Zoo tote bag while supplies last, and for a little extra, families can take a spin on the Speedwell Conservation Carousel or hop aboard the National Zoo Choo Choo.

Tickets are $35 for the public and $29.75 for members, with each attendee age 2 and older needing a ticket. Boo at the Zoo sells out fast every year, so booking ahead is a must — the event runs rain or shine. Costumes are warmly encouraged (just skip full-face masks). Grown-ups get their own frightfully fun evening too: Night of the Living Zoo takes over the park on Oct. 23, ages 21 and up.
