Happy City News loves a museum that treats the neighborhood like family — and this October, the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is rolling out the welcome mat with a full month of free programs for all ages.
The autumn fun kicks off with Friday storytimes for little ones, a hands-on crochet workshop led by D.C. native artist Dwayne Lawson-Brown, and a community chess tournament honoring National Chess Day on October 10. Saturdays bring the beloved FRESHFARM farm stand to the museum’s plaza, with fresh produce available through November 21.
Garden lovers can join a fall garden workshop on October 24, and families won’t want to miss the festive pumpkin-painting party on Halloween day, October 31 — all materials provided, no carving required.
While visiting, explore the museum’s current exhibition, “We Make History,” on view through January 2028, featuring treasures like the Plummer family diary, Marian Anderson’s coat, and a guitar that belonged to Chuck Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go.
Founded in 1967, this gem in Southeast D.C. celebrates the stories, resilience, and joy of Washington’s communities. Admission is free, and the museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1901 Fort Place SE.
