Tucked into the Columbia Heights neighborhood, Meridian Hill Park feels like a secret Italy dropped into the middle of Washington, D.C. Completed in 1936, its grand cascading fountain — the longest of its kind in North America — tumbles down 13 basins in a joyful rush of water and light.
Statues of Joan of Arc, Dante and even President James Buchanan watch over terraced gardens, reflecting pools and shady promenades. On Sunday afternoons the park comes alive with a legendary drum circle that has been going strong for decades, drawing dancers, picnickers and pure neighborhood joy.
It is wonderful for families, romantics and anyone who loves hidden gems. Pack a picnic, find a spot by the cascade, and stay for the Sunday drum circle if you can. Tip: the fountain runs from spring through fall — visit on a warm afternoon for the full effect.
