Fall in Washington, DC: New Openings, Big Sports and Only-in-DC Experiences

Fall is one of the most exciting seasons to experience Washington, DC, and this year the nation’s capital is pulling out all the stops. Destination DC, the city’s official destination marketing organization, has unveiled a packed fall lineup of new openings, sports spectacles and only-in-DC experiences.

The season brings major attraction openings: on November 11, the National Air and Space Museum will unveil its seventh new gallery of the year, completing a grand renovation that began in 2018. The Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial, honoring those who served in the 1990-91 Gulf War, will be dedicated on October 24. Visitors can also explore what is under the Lincoln Memorial, where images of historic events are projected onto its foundation, and the newly reopened National Geographic Museum of Exploration.

Sports fans have plenty to cheer: on October 10, the U.S. women’s national soccer team faces world No. 1 Spain at Audi Field, which also hosts the National Women’s Soccer League championship on November 21. The Marine Corps Marathon, the third-largest marathon in the U.S., takes over the city on October 25. And hockey legend Alex Ovechkin returns for his 22nd season with the Capitals.

With outstanding restaurants, neighborhood festivals and the beauty of DC in the fall, there has never been a better time to plan an experience-driven getaway to the capital.
