Most aquariums start with the ocean. The Florida Aquarium starts where Florida’s water does — in the wetlands. Its Wetlands Trail winds beneath a living mangrove canopy where river otters tumble, alligators drift, spoonbills flash pink and free-flying birds cross the dome above the boardwalk.
The trail recreates the state’s freshwater heart: a spring-fed stream, marsh and swamp habitats stacked with the turtles, gar and wading birds that thrive where Tampa’s rivers begin. Keeper talks turn the boardwalk into a classroom several times a day.
It’s the aquarium’s most Florida room — humid, green and gloriously alive — and the essential first chapter before the trail descends to bays and coral reefs.
Start where the raindrops do. The Wetlands Trail is the source of the story.
