The Gasparilla Film Festival: Tampa’s Big Screen Weekend

Each spring, Tampa rolls out its own red carpet: the Gasparilla International Film Festival brings independent cinema from around the world to screens across the city — anchored at the Tampa Theatre — with filmmaker Q&As, industry panels and parties that have made it one of the Southeast’s signature film events.

Born in 2007 amid the Gasparilla season, the festival champions Florida filmmakers alongside international premieres, its “Rising Stars” and student showcases building a pipeline from Tampa film sets to the festival circuit. Screenings spill into Ybor and downtown venues, turning the city into a film campus for a long weekend.

For local cinema lovers, it’s the year’s essential calendar mark: world cinema, hometown pride, palace setting.

Gasparilla’s pirates invade by sea. Its filmmakers invade by screen — and Tampa surrenders happily to both.
