Seeing Double: SFMOMA’s ‘Theater of Two’ Celebrates Photography in Pairs

San Francisco loves a good double take, and SFMOMA is turning that delight into a whole exhibition. Theater of Two, a joyful new photography show drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, will run from March 13 to December 12, 2027, celebrating all the surprising ways pairs show up in pictures — and in everyday life.

The exhibition explores doubles, binaries, twinning and dualism in photography, taking its inspiration from Robert Cumming’s playful Theatre for Two — Easy Analogies (1978). Visitors can experience “twoness” firsthand: the classic pairing of a negative and its positive print, diptychs designed to be read side by side, the front and back — recto and verso — of a single photograph, and different prints made from the very same negative, each telling a slightly different story.

It is a wonderfully accessible idea for curious visitors of every age. Symmetry, repetition and comparison are things we notice everywhere, from matching outfits to mirrored reflections, and this show invites everyone to slow down, look twice and spot the connections. Announced as part of SFMOMA’s 2026–27 season, Theater of Two is one more reason to plan a happy museum day at 151 Third Street, in the heart of the city. Happy City News will be counting the pairs.
