Illuminate SF Turns the Whole City Into a Gallery of Light, Nov. 27 to Jan. 31

When the nights grow longest, San Francisco answers with light. Illuminate SF, the city’s beloved Festival of Light, returns from November 27, 2026 through January 31, 2027, turning streets, bridges and plazas across the 49 square miles into an open-air gallery of more than 60 permanent and temporary light artworks — nearly all of them free to enjoy.

The brightest icon of the season is The Bay Lights, Leo Villareal’s sweeping installation on the western span of the Bay Bridge, where tens of thousands of LED lights ripple and shimmer above the water in patterns that never repeat. From the Embarcadero, the view pairs the bridge with the glowing Ferry Building for one of the great nighttime walks in any American city.

The festival’s light art trail winds through neighborhood after neighborhood: illuminated sculptures in SoMa, glowing installations along the waterfront, and radiant works tucked into downtown plazas, each one an excuse to bundle up and explore a different corner of the city after dark. SF Travel publishes a guide to the standout installations, making it easy to plan a self-guided evening stroll or a whole weekend of light hunting.

Most installations switch on at dusk and glow until late, all season long. Grab a hot drink, bring someone you like, and let San Francisco show off its luminous side.
