San Francisco families have a front-row seat to the bay at Presidio Tunnel Tops, the 14-acre park built right on top of the Presidio Parkway tunnels in the Presidio. Open every day and free for everyone, it is the kind of place where a simple afternoon turns into a full family adventure, with the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the bay sparkling in the background.
The star for kids is the Outpost, a two-acre play area built from natural materials found in the park itself ā fallen trees to climb, boulders to scramble over, tunnels to crawl through and swings with a view. Steps away, the Field Station invites curious minds to explore nature up close, with hands-on activities, field specimens and friendly staff who help young visitors discover the plants and wildlife of the Presidio.
Grown-ups get plenty too: wide lawns made for picnics, benches along the cliff walk, gardens planted with native species, and food options nearby at the Presidio Pop Up and the visitor center. Many families pair Tunnel Tops with a stroll down to Crissy Field beach, just below, for a full day outdoors without ever starting the car twice.
Presidio Tunnel Tops is at 210 Lincoln Boulevard, with transit and parking nearby. Happy City News tip: come in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden over the bridge and the playground is at its happiest.
