Ancient Egypt has landed in Golden Gate Park, and San Francisco gets to see it first. The de Young museum is hosting the United States premiere of Treasures of the Pharaohs, a breathtaking international exhibition that brings 130 rare treasures from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Luxor Museum straight to the Bay Area.
Spanning 3,000 years of Egyptian history, the exhibition traces the reign of the pharaohs from around 3100 BC to 30 BC. Visitors will stand before monumental granite statues, admire delicately crafted gold jewelry, and even gaze at the gilded outer coffin of Thuya from the Valley of the Kings. Six richly themed sections reveal how the pharaohs ruled as kings, military leaders, and chief priests, and how the people around them — royal family members, artisans, and servants — kept the kingdom running.
It is a rare chance to encounter the daily life, beliefs, and artistic genius of a civilization often called the cradle of civilization. Whether you are a history lover, an art admirer, or a family looking for an unforgettable day out, this exhibition promises wonder at every turn.
Treasures of the Pharaohs is on view at the de Young through January 31, 2027. Happy City News invites you to plan your visit and step into the world of the gods on Earth.
