Ancient Cambodia’s Monumental Vishnu Arrives in San Francisco: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Exhibition

San Francisco is about to host one of the most extraordinary artworks on the planet. The Asian Art Museum announces Vishnu’s Cosmic Ocean, a special exhibition opening October 23, 2026, and running through January 25, 2027.

The centerpiece is a colossal bronze figure of the Hindu god Vishnu, recognized as the largest ancient bronze ever discovered in Southeast Asia. Nearly a thousand years ago, this masterpiece rested on a man-made island in the middle of a vast reservoir in the Khmer kingdom of Angkor, in present-day Cambodia. Reclining on a cosmic serpent and floating on primordial waters, it once embodied divine power and the prosperity of one of the world’s great civilizations.

Buried for centuries and rediscovered only in 1936, the recently restored sculpture arrives on loan from the National Museum of Cambodia. The exhibition anchors the museum’s first special exhibition devoted exclusively to Cambodian art, and marks the final stop of an international tour — a rare opportunity, as this Cambodian national treasure is unlikely to travel again.

Presented in the museum’s Osher Foundation Gallery, the show also celebrates the Asian Art Museum’s commitment to working with the Kingdom of Cambodia to promote and protect its rich cultural heritage.

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Plan your visit at the Asian Art Museum, 200 Larkin Street, San Francisco.
