San Diego Bay Parade of Lights Returns December 13 and 20: 80 Glowing Boats Celebrate 250 Years

San Diego’s most sparkling holiday tradition is back on the water. The 56th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights lights up the bayfront on Sunday, December 13 and Sunday, December 20, 2026, with this year’s theme, “Liberty Lights the Bay — Cheers to 250 Years!” Boats will be decorated to match the patriotic theme, turning the bay into a floating festival of color and light.

Organizers expect about 80 boats lavishly decorated for the procession, and more than 100,000 residents and visitors usually line the shores to watch. Best of all, there is no cost to view the parade — just pick a spot along the bayfront, settle in with family and friends, and enjoy the show as the boats glide past after dark.

The procession starts at 5:30 p.m. and follows its parade route along the bayfront to the pier at Chicano Park before making the turn to Coronado, giving spectators another wonderful area to watch from. Organizers remind everyone to arrive early, because the most popular viewing locations fill up quickly. Bring a blanket, a warm drink and your holiday spirit, and plan a relaxed evening by the water.

Whether you watch for the creative decorations, the reflections dancing on the bay or a simple night out with loved ones, the Parade of Lights is a joyful San Diego tradition for all ages — and Happy City News can’t wait to see the bay shine again.
