Pull Up a Chair: Witte Museum Serves Up the Story Behind Texas Food Traditions

What’s on your plate says a lot about where you come from — and the Witte Museum just turned that idea into a brand-new exhibition the whole family can sink its teeth into.

“Gather ‘Round the Table: Texas Food Traditions” is now open in the Kathleen and Curtis Gunn Gallery, running through February 7, 2027. The exhibition digs into the ingredients, the people and the cultural exchanges behind the familiar Texas foods we love, showing how the land, its people and the traditions they brought, shared and adapted shaped what ends up on Texas tables today.

Visitors can explore artifacts from the Witte’s own collection, hear food stories from across the state and trace how Indigenous knowledge, agriculture, migration, trade, technology and changing tastes built the Lone Star pantry.

The fun centerpiece is “Pull Up a Chair,” an interactive table where you build your own Texas plate and compare choices with family and friends: breakfast taco or potluck favorite? Corn or flour tortilla? Red or green salsa? It’s a deliciously playful way to discover what your Texas tastes reveal about you.

The exhibition is open to all ages with a special exhibition ticket, and it’s presented by H-E-B — a fitting sponsor for a celebration of Texas flavor. Grab your appetite and gather ’round!
