King William Historic District: San Antonio’s Victorian Gem

South of downtown, the King William Historic District preserves San Antonio’s most elegant chapter. This 25-block neighborhood of grand Victorian, Greek Revival, and Italianate mansions was home to the city’s German merchants in the late 1800s — and today it’s one of Texas’s most beautiful historic districts.

Tree-lined streets invite leisurely walks past lovingly restored homes with wraparound porches, ornate details, and colorful gardens. The Steves Homestead Museum opens its doors for tours, and the district’s riverside location along the River Walk’s Museum Reach makes it easy to explore on foot.

King William is ideal for architecture lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys a peaceful stroll through history. Tip: visit during the annual King William Fair in spring, when the neighborhood celebrates with art, music, and open porches — or simply come on a quiet morning and let the mansions tell their stories.
