Something extraordinary is coming to San Antonio’s art scene! The McNay Art Museum invites visitors to literally step inside a story with “Sunjammer 6: A Tale Blown by a Solar Breeze,” a dazzling new immersive installation by pioneering multimedia artist Toni Dove, on view November 21, 2026 through February 21, 2027.
Part visual novel, part movie, part story-telling machine, “Sunjammer 6” blends sculpture, cinema, and live performance into a sci-fi love story that stretches across oceans of time. Visitors enter a dreamlike world where they interact with virtual characters in real time: Hypatia, the brilliant mathematician, philosopher and astronomer of ancient Alexandria, and Kepler Redux, a NASA engineer a decade in the future building an off-world power station.
Using machine learning, skeletal tracking and multi-channel audio, the custom-built system reacts to each visitor’s movements, so no two experiences are alike. Stay still and Hypatia may greet you one way; move playfully through the space and she responds differently. The 20-minute infinity loop lets you enter at any point.
The exhibition also features an augmented-reality gallery, where pages from Dove’s accompanying publication lift off the page in three-dimensional space, and culminates in two live performances on February 18 and 20, with three dancer-operators “playing” the installation for an audience in the round.
A joyful celebration of curiosity, knowledge and human connection, “Sunjammer 6” is included with museum admission. The McNay is open Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
