February is Portland’s darkest month — so Portland fills it with light. The Portland Winter Light Festival, a free citywide celebration since 2016, scatters illuminated art across both riverbanks: glowing sculptures, projection-mapped buildings, lantern parades and bridges washed in color.
The festival is built by artists, makers and community groups, with anchor installations downtown and on the Central Eastside and satellite displays in neighborhoods across the city. Fire dancers, silent discos in lit-up plazas and a beloved illuminated bike ride keep the nights warm even when the air isn’t.
It’s Portland’s most photogenic week and its most Portland idea: winter is not something to endure but to illuminate — together, for free.
